The cultural offering includes a presentation by choreographer Marina Mascarell with the Danish Dance Theatre, the absolute premiere of Rafaela Carrasco's new flamenco show, and the free program ‘Celebra26’, commemorating International Dance Day. The activities will culminate on April 29 with Porque yo lo bailo, a participatory party open to the public.
Between April 9 and 11, the Danish Dance Theatre will present Bloody Moon, the first creation by Valencian Marina Mascarell for the Danish national company. Inspired by Georges Bataille's work Eroticism, this contemporary dance piece explores different forms of eroticism through vibrant choreography, celebrating life and desire. The choreography, a result of collaboration between Mascarell and the dancers, combines original music by Yamila Rios with innovative costumes by Nina Botkay, creating a visually striking proposal.
From April 16 to 19, Centro Danza Matadero will host the absolute premiere of Humo, the new show by choreographer and bailaora Rafaela Carrasco, recipient of the National Dance Award 2023. With direction and choreography by Carrasco herself and dramaturgy by Álvaro Tato, Humo pays tribute to the cigarreras, a historical group of working women. Through flamenco singing, music, and dance, the work recreates the daily universe of these women in tobacco factories, addressing their struggles against abuse and their pursuit of economic and vital independence.
In an era marked by ageism and the exaltation of youth, continuing to dance after crossing the sixty-year mark is an act of resistance.
The special program will conclude on April 29 with ‘Celebra26’, a day of free activities to commemorate International Dance Day. At 12:00 PM, in Nave 16.1, Bailar más allá de los 60 (Dancing Beyond 60) will take place, an encounter where prominent figures of Spanish dance such as Carmen Werner, Cesc Gelabert, La Ribot, and Mónica Runde, moderated by journalist Javier Torres, will share their experiences on the relationship between the passage of time, the body, and scenic creation.
In the afternoon, starting at 7:30 PM, Nave 11 will transform into an open dance floor with Porque yo lo bailo, a large collective party. Directed by Enrique Cabrera (Aracaladanza), this celebration will feature live music, DJs, chotis, and guest companies, inviting the audience to become protagonists of dance and imagination.
