Inspired by Zohran Mamdani's door-to-door campaign in New York, Más Madrid has adopted this strategy to connect with citizens. The initiative focuses on housing, a priority issue for the political group, and seeks to establish a "great conversation" with residents to understand their concerns.
The councilor for Chamberí, Sara Ladra, led a group of volunteers in Plaza de Olavide, who prepared to visit homes. The main objective was to inform about the royal decree that allows rental contracts to be extended for two more years, provided tenants send a burofax to their landlords before the deadline.
The volunteers, equipped with reflective vests and a mobile application with a digital map, have already carried out several rounds in different districts of Madrid. To date, they have contacted over 5,000 households and expect to double this figure, aiming to address the housing crisis directly.
“"It's incredible how much people want to be heard. I didn't expect so many people to open their homes to strangers, especially coming from a political party they may or may not agree with."
During the day in Chamberí, volunteers knocked on 258 doors, receiving responses at 102 of them. They managed to process 12 rental extensions on the spot, a percentage that party sources consider positive, especially in a district traditionally strong for the Popular Party. This direct contact strategy has also been implemented in areas such as San Cristóbal, Villaverde, and Arganzuela, as well as in Aranjuez and other municipalities in the region.
