The Community of Madrid will host a reenactment this Saturday in the central Puerta del Sol of the uprising by the people of Madrid against the French army on May 2, 1808, following the events in the Plaza de Oriente.

This 30-minute theatrical staging will be performed by the Asociación Histórico-Cultural Voluntarios de Madrid 1808-1814. The event will gather hundreds of participants, carriages, and cannons, featuring two narrators who will guide the audience through the unfolding events, as reported by the regional government.
Puerta del Sol will be transformed into a period market where citizens converse, unaware of the impending events. The public will witness the arrival of a French sergeant leading a platoon, whose mission is to transport Infanta María Luisa and Infante Francisco de Paula by carriage for their departure from the country.

It is then that the locksmith Blas de Molina warns that the Royal Family is being taken to France, which triggers the first shots and commotion in the square.

Spontaneously, hundreds of Madrileños confront the French soldiers. At that moment, a French column bursts in unannounced, the cannon opens fire, and the crowd panics, resulting in numerous wounded and deceased.
The Asociación Histórico-Cultural Voluntarios de Madrid 1808-1814 is a non-profit organization declared of public utility by the Madrid City Council. Composed of a large group of people of all ages, it has been recreating the two Madrid Volunteer Regiments, formed in 1808 and involved in multiple battles of the War of Independence, for over 20 years.
