The Community of Madrid has called on the Central Government to reactivate the railway corridor connecting the capital with Aranda de Duero and Burgos, a crucial infrastructure that has been paralyzed since March 2011 following an incident in the Somosierra tunnel.

Jorge Rodrigo, the regional Minister of Housing, Transport, and Infrastructure, made this appeal during an event organized by the Madrid Business Confederation (CEIM) and the Burgos Business Associations Confederation. The disruption of this route, now spanning over 15 years, has created a significant gap in both passenger and freight transport.

"It has been more than 15 years without a direct and relevant route for passenger and freight transport, which would reduce the current journey by more than 100 kilometers and decongest the A-1 by offering an effective alternative to road travel."

According to Rodrigo, restoring this railway line would not only shorten travel distances by over 100 kilometers but also alleviate congestion on the A-1, providing an efficient alternative to road transport. The minister emphasized the importance of heeding business entities that have long advocated for this infrastructure due to its direct impact on national competitiveness and logistical organization.
The regional Executive has expressed its strong support for this initiative, committing to press for the modernization and reactivation of the line, bringing it up to current European standards. The corridor's paralysis dates back to March 2011, when a tamping machine became trapped inside the Somosierra tunnel following a landslide.
