For the first time, traineras, traditional fixed-seat rowing boats with deep roots in northern Spain, will compete in the region. The Association of Rowing Clubs (ACT), along with the Buitrago del Lozoya City Council and the Community of Madrid, have formalized a sponsorship agreement to bring this sporting spectacle to the Sierra de Guadarrama.
The Riosequillo reservoir has been chosen as the venue for the opening of the Eusko Label League and the Euskotren League, marking a milestone as the first location outside the Cantabrian Sea to host such an event. The event will not only feature the sporting competition but also a Fan Zone and various promotional activities for attendees.
As part of the agreement, the Community of Madrid will lend its name to the men's race, which will be called “Bandera Pueblos con Vida Comunidad de Madrid”. The women's race will be named “Bandera Canal de Isabel II 175 aniversario”, reinforcing the region's connection to the event.
The staging of these races in inland waters is part of the ACT's strategy to increase the visibility of traineras rowing beyond its traditional settings in northern Spain. Cities such as Zaragoza, Bordeaux, Barcelona, Málaga, and Seville have previously hosted similar competitions.
The agreement was signed at the Real Casa de Postas. The president of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, highlighted the region's pride in Spanish sports and traditions, emphasizing the importance of holding major events in historically charming municipalities like Buitrago del Lozoya.
The competitions will be held in a time-trial format. The men's category will feature six lengths and five turns (ciabogas), while the women's will have four lengths and three turns. The ACT, founded in 2003, brings together the 20 main clubs in this discipline in northern Spain, totaling approximately 450 athletes.
The primary objective of this collaboration is to boost tourism and economic activity in the Sierra Norte, as well as to promote Buitrago del Lozoya as a sporting hub.
