This Saturday, La Florida Cemetery in Madrid was the setting for the traditional floral offering in honor of the Heroes of May 2nd, 1808. This event is part of the celebrations for the Day of the Community of Madrid.
The regional president has led the tribute for the seventh consecutive year. During the ceremony, the head of the regional Executive signed the Book of Honor, located in the cemetery chapel.
“"All the heroes of May 2nd and 3rd and the days before and after, and those who gave their lives for the freedom of Spain from the streets of Madrid."
Prior to the floral offering, the president lit the votive flame, a symbolic gesture in memory of the protagonists of the Uprising of the people of Madrid against French troops. This act was carried out together with the president of the Philanthropic Society of National Militiamen, as reported by the regional Government.
The ceremony also included a military parade, which featured the participation of the War Band, an honors section, and a squad of sappers from the 71st Anti-Aircraft Artillery Regiment. The president was accompanied by the mayor of Madrid, the president of the Assembly of Madrid, several regional government councilors, the head of the General Air Command-Representative of the Armed Forces, and the head of the Army Quartering Directorate.
