The new Protocol for prevention measures against microorganism transmission in residential centers for the elderly was developed by a multidisciplinary working group coordinated by the Deputy General Directorate of Public Health Surveillance of the Community of Madrid.
This collaborative effort, presented on April 9 at the public Santa Cristina Hospital in the capital, highlights the importance of fluid and structured cooperation between different levels of the healthcare and social-healthcare systems to combat infections in residential settings.
The transmission of infections poses a growing challenge in these centers, directly impacting residents' health by exacerbating fragility, increasing morbidity and mortality, and raising healthcare resource consumption. The technical document aims to provide practical guidance to mitigate these risks.
Considering that residences are home to their occupants, the protocol emphasizes the need to stratify risk based on each resident's characteristics and adapt precautions accordingly. This requires continuous training for professionals and active participation from residents and their families.
The main objective is to promote safe, quality, and efficient care, aligned with the Public Health strategies of the Community of Madrid. The document is complemented by infographics on hand hygiene, glove use, precautionary measures, and waste management, serving as practical material for the centers.
