The Madrid City Council and the College of Civil Engineers have announced an international ideas competition to replace the Vado footbridge, a key infrastructure connecting the districts of Arganzuela and Usera over the Manzanares River and the M-30.

The delegate of Public Works and Equipment, Paloma García Romero, and the dean of the college, María Dolores Esteban, made the announcement during a visit to the site. They were accompanied by the councilors for Arganzuela, Lola Navarro, and for Usera, Sonia Cea, highlighting the importance of this initiative for the city.
The Vado footbridge is one of more than thirty structures crossing the Manzanares River in the capital. Its location is strategic, connecting the intersection of Maestro Arbós, Teresa López Valcárcel, and Ricardo Damas streets on the left bank of the river, with Vado and Antonio López streets on the right bank. In addition to spanning the river, the footbridge crosses Manzanares Avenue and the M-30, covering nine lanes of traffic in total.
Currently, the footbridge presents significant functional deficiencies, especially in terms of accessibility and safety. There are areas with reduced visibility and elements that hinder safe pedestrian passage. Therefore, the City Council considers its replacement by a new pedestrian and cyclist footbridge essential, one that incorporates modern design, functionality, and safety criteria, adapted to current and future urban challenges.
This marks the first time that the City Council's Public Works and Equipment department has launched an ideas competition of this magnitude in collaboration with the College of Civil Engineers of Madrid. The competition aims to attract the best international proposals and includes three main prizes, endowed with 25,000 euros, 15,000 euros, and 10,000 euros respectively, in addition to up to three honorable mentions of 5,000 euros each. The winner of the first prize will have the possibility of being awarded the drafting of the preliminary project and the construction project by the City Council.
