The Community of Madrid has paid tribute to blood donors, acknowledging their altruism and commitment in an event held at the regional Transfusion Center.

On the eve of World Blood Donor Day, the Community of Madrid held a recognition event at the regional Transfusion Center to thank those whose generosity saves lives through donation. The event aligns with the World Health Organization's theme: "A drop of humanity. Donate Blood. Save lives."
During the ceremony, tribute was paid to the region's "grand donors". A grand donor is defined as a man who has made over 100 donations or a woman who has reached 75. The Community of Madrid also highlighted the significant collaboration of companies and institutions in maintaining a stable blood supply, which is crucial for emergencies, surgical procedures, and long-term treatments.
Over the past twelve months, a total of 168,785 Madrileños participated in this act of solidarity. Of these, 21.63% donated blood for the first time. The regional administration emphasizes the vital importance of blood donation, as blood cannot be manufactured and is indispensable for many individuals. The region requires approximately 900 daily donations to meet hospital activity needs. Certain blood components, such as platelets, which are vital for patients with oncohematological conditions and coagulation disorders, have a very short shelf life, expiring within five days.
The process to become a blood donor is straightforward and accessible. Basic requirements include being between 18 and 65 years old, weighing over 50 kilograms, and being in good health. The donation itself takes no more than 20 minutes. Men can donate up to six times a year, and women up to four times, with a minimum interval of two months between donations.
Donation points are available not only at the Transfusion Center but also at various hospitals across the region. Additionally, mobile units from the Community of Madrid and the Red Cross, as well as the Juan Montalvo hall of the Red Cross, facilitate donations. Comprehensive information on locations and schedules can be found on the Community of Madrid's official blood donation website.
As part of Donation Week, individuals who donated at the Transfusion Center this week were entered into a raffle for two tickets to the Operación Triunfo concert at the Movistar Arena, scheduled for July 3rd. Furthermore, donors had the opportunity to experience mixed reality virtual reality glasses.
