The Community of Madrid will allocate 7 million euros to convert currently vacant public commercial spaces into social housing for vulnerable families across various municipalities in the region.

The Community of Madrid has approved the awarding of a 7 million euro contract aimed at converting currently vacant public commercial spaces into social housing. This initiative, with an initial duration of two years and the possibility of extension, seeks to increase the housing supply for vulnerable families and optimize the real estate assets of the Agency for Social Housing (AVS).
The works will include the comprehensive rehabilitation of the properties, covering the renovation of essential facilities such as plumbing, electricity, sanitation, and air conditioning. Furthermore, interior layouts will be reconfigured to adapt them for residential use, ensuring optimal habitability, accessibility, and energy efficiency, in compliance with current regulations and with special attention to reduced mobility.
This project involves the transformation of over 70 commercial spaces into new social housing units. These will be added to the 41 already completed and another 14 currently underway, bringing the total number of rehabilitated spaces to approximately 150 in locations such as Madrid, Aranjuez, Valdemoro, and Alcalá de Henares.
The AVS manages over 50,000 properties across 119 municipalities in the region. Alongside this expansion of public housing, the Community maintains a continuous program for its conservation and maintenance. This action is part of the Housing Shock Plan 2026/27, announced by President Isabel Díaz Ayuso last November.
