Coordinated through the Madrid 112 Security and Emergency Agency, the deployment consists of 40 professionals from the regional Fire Department. The team has begun its transit from the Torrejón de Ardoz air base to provide support in the areas impacted by the seismic event.
In addition to the firefighting personnel, the mission includes four canine units specialized in victim location and medical staff from the Summa 112 service. The Department of Environment, Agriculture and Interior confirmed that the contingent departed after loading necessary intervention equipment at the Central Fire Station in Las Rozas.
The ERICAM team has extensive experience in international emergencies, having participated in operations following earthquakes in Haiti in 2010, Lorca in 2011, and Ecuador in 2016. The team also assisted in forest fire suppression efforts in Portugal during the summer of 2017.
The unit specializes in large-scale earthquake rescue, including structural assessment, stabilization of unstable elements, and victim access. Since 2011, the team has held the USAR (Urban Search and Rescue) classification granted by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
