The Madrid City Council has begun work on the preliminary project for the renovation of the central Plaza de las Descalzas, aiming to enhance urban space and pedestrian mobility in the area.

The delegate for Works and Equipment, Paloma García Romero, announced this initiative during a commission, highlighting the need to reform this space due to its current configuration, characterized by fragmentation and the dominance of vehicular traffic. In particular, the impact of the ramps of the existing underground car park in the square has been noted.
The Madrid consistory plans for the intervention in Plaza de las Descalzas to begin once other ongoing reforms in the city center are completed. This strategy seeks to avoid the saturation of simultaneous actions in the same area.
Furthermore, the municipal government is evaluating other projects, such as a possible intervention in Plaza de las Comendadoras, in response to requests received from the districts. These actions are part of a series of renovations that the City Council is carrying out in several emblematic squares in the center of Madrid.
Among the squares that have already been or are being reformed are Matute, whose work has already concluded; Tirso de Molina, expected to finish this spring; and Jacinto Benavente, currently underway. The general purpose of these interventions is to improve the quality of urban space, incorporate more vegetation, restore prominence to pedestrians, widen sidewalks, optimize pedestrian routes, and create new resting areas.
