The designs by six Madrid primary school students, including a Christmas harlequin and a happy reindeer, will be transformed into lights that will adorn the streets of Madrid during the upcoming festive season. The capital's City Council has announced the winners of the third edition of its school drawing competition, aimed at involving children in the Christmas decorations.
The Mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, accompanied by the Delegate for Works and Equipment, Paloma García Romero, and several council members, presented the awards to the young artists. Almeida praised the "creativity" and "talent" of the participants, describing their works as "the best reflection of a wonderful time" and thanking them for their contribution to the "12 million light bulbs" that illuminate the city each Christmas.
“"Although it is June, we will see each other at the end of November and together we will turn on the Christmas lights."
The competition was open to first and second-year primary school students, with each school selecting one proposal. A jury chose the six winning drawings based on originality and the Christmas emotions conveyed. The winners are Arabia Amador Gabarre ('Christmas Harlequin'), Alba Heras Castro ('The Magi'), Samuel Politado Nabaonag ('The Virgin Mary'), Sofía Liciu Budur ('The Happy Reindeer'), Amelia Marina Sánchez Díaz ('Merry Christmas'), and Mateo Jiménez Miguel ('Bethlehem Stars').
The technical team from the Area of Works and Equipment will be responsible for materializing the selected drawings into lighting elements, aiming for the highest possible fidelity. Through this initiative, the council seeks to foster children's creativity and involve them in the lighting, which has become an international benchmark.
