The Lavapiés neighborhood once again hosted the traditional Las Mayas festival, a celebration declared an Asset of Cultural Interest in 2023 and a National Award for Popular Traditions in 2024, which proceeded with a large turnout despite adverse weather conditions.

The festive day, held on Sunday, saw the participation of the delegate for Culture, Tourism and Sport and the councilor for the Central District, who highlighted the effort to keep this tradition alive. Both acknowledged the work of organizers and participants, especially on a day when rain made the events challenging.
The celebration began with traditional dances by Arrabel and the La Dulzaina de Aluche School, followed by the popular Baile del Rondón, which gathered many residents and visitors. Afterwards, the streets of La Fe, Salitre, Doctor Piga, and Argumosa transformed into a popular street party, offering traditional doughnuts and wines from the Madrid region, along with the distribution of flowers and plants, all accompanied by the singing of May songs.

"The preservation of our traditions is fundamental to keeping alive the cultural identity of our neighborhoods."

The day concluded with the traditional floral offering at the San Lorenzo church, a solemn act accompanied by the voices of the Coro de Voces Graves de Madrid, adding a musical and emotional touch to the festivity.
