The large cross installed in Plaza de Lima for the vigil presided over by Pope Leo XIV will remain in the capital, as announced by the mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez-Almeida.

The decision to preserve the structure, approximately 25 meters high, follows a signature collection campaign promoted by the association HazteOír and was defended by the Madrid mayor as "a very special gift" from the Archdiocese of Madrid.
Although the cross was temporarily removed after the papal visit, the City Council is now studying its permanent reinstallation, with Plaza de Lima as the preferred option if technical reports allow. "It makes perfect sense for it to stay in Plaza de Lima itself. We hope we can do it; if not, it will have another location in Madrid," the mayor explained to the media.
Martínez-Almeida emphasized that the cross will be a "permanent testimony of unforgettable days we spent in this city, as well as of the Christian roots of Madrid and Madrileño society."
The initiative aligns with the formal request from HazteOír, which submitted over 45,000 signatures requesting the preservation of the monument, considered "a powerful symbol of our faith" and a recognition of Madrid's historical and cultural identity.
The City Council is also exploring other alternatives to commemorate the Pontiff's visit and plans institutional tributes to Benedict XVI and Francis, recognizing the "special relationship" of the three popes with Madrid.
Additionally, the mayor announced a Christmas concert by the 'Coro Familiar Los Mil' as "another gift" for the people of Madrid.
