The proposal, registered on the Decide Madrid platform under code 24045, seeks neighborhood support to proceed within the 2026-2027 Participatory Budgets. Support collection will continue until June 30th.
The initiative aims to create a permanent tribute to Ignacio Echeverría, who became a symbol of courage by intervening to help people attacked by terrorists in London in June 2017. His actions saved three lives, including two police officers.
The project plans for a bronze sculpture on a pedestal, approximately three and a half meters high, in one of the capital's most iconic locations. Designs under consideration include Echeverría holding his skateboard or in the act of aiding victims.
The association argues that the future monument, with an estimated cost of around 82,700 euros, would serve to transmit values such as solidarity, freedom, civic commitment, and selfless help to others to new generations.
The entity believes the city should publicly recognize one of its most admired citizens. To vote, individuals must be over 16, registered residents of Madrid, and have a verified account on Decide Madrid.
