Hospitals in the Community of Madrid have successfully restored their blood reserves to optimal levels, although an urgent need for donations for the O+ group persists.

Blood reserves in the hospitals of the Community of Madrid have reached optimal levels in recent weeks, as the Transfusion Center reminded through its social media channels. However, an urgent need for donations for the O+ blood group remains, with reserves still below the desired level. The other seven blood groups show normal levels, although regular donation is encouraged.
Earlier this month, the Regional Government issued an urgent appeal for blood donations due to a red alert situation affecting all groups, with reserves at 35% ahead of the summer season, a period when donations typically decrease due to holidays.

"With your generosity, we have managed to restore blood reserves. To prevent them from dropping again, it is important to maintain the donation pace."

The Transfusion Center
The demand for blood is constant in Madrid's hospitals to attend to emergency patients, those undergoing surgery, or individuals requiring transfusions as part of their treatments. These needs cannot be met by other therapies, as blood cannot be manufactured and its components have an expiration date.
Annually, in the Community of Madrid, approximately 38,000 units of blood are transfused for surgeries, 42,000 to onco-hematological patients, 40,000 in Internal Medicine (for blood loss from digestive hemorrhages, bleeding ulcers, dialysis, etc.), over 30,000 in emergencies, and 9,000 in pediatric interventions, among thousands of other blood components transfused.
The basic requirements to donate blood include being between 18 and 65 years old, weighing over 50 kilograms, and being in good health. The entire process takes approximately 20 minutes.
In addition to the regional Transfusion Center, located in the Valdebernardo neighborhood, the Community of Madrid has 30 hospitals authorized for blood donation. Mobile units from the Community of Madrid and the Red Cross are also available, as is the Red Cross hall at Juan Montalvo street, 3. Detailed schedules and addresses can be found on the official website of the Community of Madrid.
