The councilor president of Fuencarral-El Pardo, José Antonio Martínez Páramo, has spearheaded this initiative, which will be debated at the district's upcoming plenary session. The proposal comes after the actress's passing on March 14 at the age of 91 in Madrid, aiming to honor her legacy on Spanish small and big screens.
Born in Barcelona in 1934, Gemma Cuervo developed a prolific career spanning theater, film, and television, with a strong connection to the Spanish capital since the 1960s. She is remembered for her role as Vicenta in the successful series Aquí no hay quien viva, set on the fictional street Desengaño, 21, a real street in the city center.
Her career includes over a hundred theatrical works, thirty television series, and more than sixty films, notably her participation in Fernando Fernán Gómez's masterpiece, El mundo sigue (1965). Her last theatrical work was in La Celestina in 2011.
The Mirasierra senior center, located at number 59 on Marbella street, was inaugurated on January 31, 2025. Its construction represented an investment of 6.5 million euros by the City Council's Works Department, supplemented by an additional 360,000 euros from the Fuencarral-El Pardo District Board. This facility is the first of its kind in a neighborhood with nearly 37,000 inhabitants.
This recognition of Gemma Cuervo by José Luis Martínez-Almeida's team is happening with remarkable speed, contrasting with other cases such as that of actress Marisa Paredes. Despite some tributes, a proposal by Más Madrid to name a cultural center in the Centro district after Paredes was rejected by the Popular Party and Vox in Cibeles.
