A family is residing in a van in Cañada Real Galiana, Madrid, after being excluded from relocation programs due to a dispute with the Community of Madrid concerning their residency registration.

The situation of Antonio and his family, who are currently sleeping in a van due to the unsanitary conditions of their home in sector VI of Cañada Real Galiana, highlights the difficulties in accessing social housing. This settlement, one of the largest in Europe, has been the subject of a regional pact to coordinate administrations and relocate its residents to public or social rental housing.
Access to these homes requires an old-age requirement, having been registered since before December 31, 2011. Antonio, who had to interrupt his residence in the area for work reasons in Guadalajara, finds himself outside this quota. He explains that his registration was interrupted and restarted due to the need to enroll his children in school while working outside Madrid.
Currently, Antonio works in scrap metal and recounts his legal journey with the Community of Madrid to secure relocation. Despite having lived "all his life" in Madrid and having previously resided in other settlements, his case is complicated by the separate periods of registration. He has submitted medical reports and Social Services files through a legal aid lawyer.
