This plan, coordinated by the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO), establishes a framework for the recovery of diverse ecosystems, including terrestrial, coastal, marine, riverine, and urban environments. It aims to improve the conservation status of nature and, consequently, environmental and human well-being, while also promoting socioeconomic activities in areas showing signs of deterioration.
The European Nature Restoration Regulation introduces, for the first time, legally binding targets for Member States focused on restoring degraded ecosystems. It sets specific goals for different habitat types and mandates the development of a national plan detailing the strategies to achieve them.
The formulation of this project has involved extensive coordination among the various administrations with responsibilities in the areas affected by the regulation. The MITECO has collaborated closely with autonomous communities, autonomous cities, and other administrations, as well as with numerous entities and citizens, to gather information, identify restoration needs, and define the necessary actions.
This process has allowed for the integration, following the common format required by the European Commission, of the various measures planned for nature restoration, adapting them to the specific characteristics and needs of Spain's different territories and ecosystems.
