Enma López, a councilwoman in Madrid City Hall and deputy spokesperson for the PSOE Federal Executive Commission, will seek the socialist candidacy for the City Council. Her decision places her in direct competition with Reyes Maroto, who has already expressed her desire to continue as spokesperson and candidate.
López, who was 'number 3' on Maroto's 2023 ticket and campaign coordinator, has progressively taken on more significant roles within the party. Following her campaign coordination role, she was appointed federal secretary of Economic Policy for the PSOE by Pedro Sánchez and later assumed the Deputy Spokesperson position for the Socialist Municipal Group.
Her name has been considered a key asset for the socialists in the capital, frequently mentioned for various candidacies over the years, including in 2023 when speculation surrounded who would accompany Juan Lobato.
“"Without a doubt, these three years have given me local experience and knowledge"
For her part, Reyes Maroto has repeatedly stated her intention to be the candidate, emphasizing the experience gained during her local term. She recently reiterated her aspiration, noting that the party is already working on developing its electoral program.
Sources within the Madrid Federation of the PSOE have expressed surprise at what they consider a 'precipitated' move, given that the primaries have not yet been officially called nor has a concrete timeline been established. The next federal committee is expected to define the deadlines, with possible calls in July, September, or November.
