Madrid's hotel tourism drops 1.43% in July due to fewer national visitors

Hotel overnight stays in the Community of Madrid saw a year-on-year decrease in July, impacted by a lower influx of Spanish tourists.

Hotel overnight stays in the Community of Madrid experienced a slight drop of 1.43% in July, reaching 2.29 million, primarily due to a decrease in national tourists, according to INE data.

In July, the region's hotels accommodated 3.38% fewer travelers compared to the same month last year, totaling 1,139,288 visitors. Of these, 504,321 were national and 634,966 were foreign.
The number of overnight stays by Spanish residents decreased by 4.92%, while those by foreign tourists saw a slight increase of 0.66%. The average stay was 2.02 nights.
The capital, Madrid, received 896,553 tourists in July, of which 546,459 were foreign, generating over 1.79 million overnight stays. It ranks as one of Spain's top tourist destinations, second only to Barcelona.
Hotel occupancy in the region reached 57.80% by the end of July. The number of open establishments increased by 8.97%, and employed staff grew by 7%.
The average daily rate stood at 129.57 euros, 0.26% less than the previous year, contrasting with the upward trend nationally.
Nationally, hotel overnight stays reached 44.8 million in July, a 0.3% increase, driven solely by foreign tourism. Spanish residents reduced their overnight stays by 1.1%.
In the first seven months of the year, overnight stays in Spain increased by 1.5%, with a 1.8% rise in foreign travelers and 0.8% in national ones. Preferred destinations for Spanish travelers were Andalusia, Catalonia, and the Valencian Community, while international tourists favored Balearic Islands, Catalonia, and the Canary Islands.
The Hotel Price Index rose by 5.9% in July, and the average revenue per occupied room was 156.8 euros.
