Pope Leo XIV was welcomed on Saturday, June 6th, by hundreds of pilgrims gathered around the Royal Palace of Madrid in the official welcome ceremony that marks the beginning of his apostolic journey through Spain.

The crowd, arriving from various parts of Spain and abroad, expressed their devotion with applause and chants such as “Pope Leo, we love you a lot” and “Long live the Pope!”. The Pontiff landed at Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport in the morning and proceeded to the Royal Palace, where he greeted the faithful from his vehicle.
Pilgrims like José Manuel from Chipiona, and Rodrigo, a 25-year-old from Madrid, shared their enthusiasm for the visit. "For Christians, it is very emotional to receive the Pope," stated Rodrigo, who highlighted the significant presence of young people with faith and expressed hope that the papal visit would help mitigate social and political tension in Spain.
Gloria, 46, and her husband Juan Carlos, 60, led a group of 55 people from Valencia. They considered the visit an "injection of faith" at a significant moment for Christianity in Spain and celebrated the massive youth turnout.
Pope Leo XIV's schedule in Madrid includes institutional events, meetings with young people, a Mass at Cibeles, a visit to the Congress of Deputies, a prayer at the Almudena Cathedral, and a gathering at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium.
