Pope Leo XIV concluded his first visit to Madrid this Tuesday, June 9, leaving a legacy of messages focused on dialogue, hope, and commitment to the common good.

The Pontiff's stay in the Spanish capital was marked by significant interventions in emblematic locations such as the Congress, Cibeles Square, the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, and the Royal Palace. Before continuing his apostolic journey to Barcelona and the Canary Islands, his words resonated with a strong call for the defense of human dignity and a critique of social polarization.
Robert Prevost's visit included acts of great symbolic weight, highlighting his historic address at the Congress of Deputies, the first by a pontiff in the Lower House. There, he questioned the "permanent disqualification of the adversary" and advocated for "disarming language" in the public sphere.
Before King Felipe VI, Queen Letizia, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, and opposition leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo, Leo XIV expressed his desire to encourage "deeper reconciliation and cooperation among the nation's various forces."
During his stay, the Pope visited the CEDIA 24 hours homeless center of Cáritas Madrid, in the Lucero neighborhood, Latina district. There, he urged to look "in the eyes" of those who suffer and described the service provided as a "sign of hope in today's world."
At the vigil held in Plaza de Lima before hundreds of thousands of young people, Leo XIV invited the youth to "change history" through love, encouraging them to be "protagonists of change" and "sparks of a new humanity."
The Corpus Christi Mass in Plaza de Cibeles gathered over 1.5 million attendees. In his homily, the Pontiff entrusted "today's and tomorrow's Spain" to ensure its historical religiosity remains "a school of faith" and not just "a museum of the past."
At the Movistar Arena, during the "Weaving Networks with the World of Culture, Art, Economy, and Sport" meeting, Leo XIV championed the footprint of the Christian faith in European cultural identity, recalling the cry, "Do not be afraid. Open wide the doors to Christ!"
In the Congress of Deputies, the Pope called for building a "culture of reciprocity," urging to "disarm language" and noting that "firmness does not require contempt." He emphasized that the defense of human life is a "goal of civilization."
In his meeting with Spanish bishops, Leo XIV asked for responses of "listening," "truth," "justice," and "repair" to those harmed, referring to abuses as a "plague" and demanding responsibility towards victims.
The day concluded at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium with a massive gathering of the diocesan Church. The Pope urged the Madrid Church to be "an open Bible" and not to confine itself to "comfortable groups or safe environments."
The visit also included relaxed moments, such as a joke about coinciding with Bad Bunny concerts, demonstrating a capital city fully engaged in a visit that combined religious, institutional, cultural events, and massive gatherings.
