The distinction, traditionally reserved for heads of state visiting the capital, was granted in a more agile format than usual due to the proximity of the main religious event. Unlike the formal ceremony typically held at Plaza de la Villa, the meeting took place near Plaza de Cibeles, where hundreds of thousands of faithful have gathered.
The event was attended by the King and Queen of Spain, the President of the Community of Madrid, the Minister of Education, Vocational Training and Sports, and various political representatives. This award, symbolizing the city's affection, was previously granted to other pontiffs such as John Paul II in 1982 and Benedict XVI in 2011.
“"It is a testimony of the affection, admiration, and love of Madrid towards the Holy Father, an essential moral compass for a city that does not ignore its roots."
During the presentation, the mayor emphasized that this gesture reaffirms the capital's bond with its Christian tradition. The day continues with the massive Eucharist, one of the central events of the Pope's official visit to Madrid.
