A union has raised concerns about the vulnerable situation of the Madrid Municipal Police, attributing the lack of long-range weapons to the inaction of the City Council and the blockade by the Government of Spain, compromising the safety of officers and citizens.
The trade union organization CSIF has publicly expressed its concern regarding the situation of the Madrid Municipal Police, stating that both the City Council and the Government of Spain are jeopardizing the integrity of officers. The complaint focuses on the difficulty in accessing long-range weapons, a measure that, according to the union, is included in the Arms Regulation of the Community of Madrid.
According to CSIF, the central Government has appealed the regional regulation that would allow local police forces to be equipped with this type of weaponry, an action described as «irresponsible». Furthermore, they accuse the Madrid City Council of maintaining a «passive attitude» and delaying the acquisition of this equipment, despite current regulations, according to the union, supporting it.
The union's claim is based on the increasing danger of police interventions. As a recent example, they highlight the operation on May 6 in Puente de Vallecas, where the Municipal Police intercepted a vehicle transporting a rifle and approximately 600 kilograms of cocaine. CSIF reminds that Spain remains at level 4 anti-terrorist alert, which demands equipment appropriate to current threats.
This complaint is particularly relevant given the proximity of major events in the city, such as MADO (Madrid Pride), the Mad Cool music festival, and local patron saint festivities in various districts. CSIF warns that facing these massive gatherings without the necessary means and personnel could seriously compromise police response capabilities and citizen safety.
