The Complutense University of Madrid (UCM), the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM), and the National University of Distance Education (UNED) have launched an ideas competition to reimagine the University City, aiming to transform it into a social and cultural meeting point for the city.

The project, supported by their Social Councils and in collaboration with the Madrid City Council, invites the academic community to propose designs that extend beyond the university's function, opening the campus to citizens and visitors.
Students, alumni, faculty, and administrative staff from the three institutions are encouraged to participate, with the goal of envisioning the University City as an "essential urban, social, cultural, and landscape destination for both citizens and travelers."

It's not just about celebrating one hundred years, but also about dreaming how Madrid wants its great campus to be for the next hundred. A new pact between the city, its universities, and its future.

The best overall proposal will be awarded 12,000 euros. Additionally, 9,000 euros will be granted for the best infrastructure and heritage initiative, and three special mentions of 3,000 euros each, promoted by the Social Councils.
The jury will comprise representatives from the three universities, the University City Consortium, the City Council, the Community of Madrid, the Official College of Architects of Madrid, the College of Civil Engineers, and other renowned professionals. Evaluation criteria will include urban quality, strategic vision, landscape and environmental integration, climate adaptation, smart and accessible mobility proposals, relationship with historical heritage, social impact and balance, as well as social innovation and graphic quality of each proposal.
The competition is open to multidisciplinary teams with an active link to UCM, UPM, or UNED as staff, alumni, or students. Each team must include at least one member from each convening university and two members from different collectives. The deadline for submitting proposals is September 21, 2026. The jury's decision will be announced in October 2026, and a public exhibition of the projects will take place in 2027, coinciding with the campus's centenary.
