Madrid's Arturo Barea square will host a free chotis masterclass on May 9th, an initiative by the Siempre Madrid association to preserve and promote this traditional dance.

The event, starting at 12 PM, invites participants to immerse themselves in Madrid's culture by learning the steps of this emblematic dance. The organization suggests attendees come dressed in mantones and parpusas, distinctive elements of traditional Madrid attire.

"The chotis is Madrid's most traditional dance."

In addition to the dance class, the event will include a practical workshop where attendees can make their own fans and carnations, essential accessories of traditional Madrid dress. This activity aims not only to teach the dance but also to encourage the creation of its accompanying elements.
The Siempre Madrid association, with over four decades of experience, is dedicated to preserving this tradition. Founded by couples who gathered to dance chotis, the entity organizes quarterly meetings to ensure this cultural expression does not disappear from the city.
The chotis, considered a cultural heritage of Madrid, was granted the category of Intangible Heritage in December 2021, coinciding with the declaration of the San Isidro Festivities as an Asset of Cultural Interest.
Originating in Central Europe in the 19th century, where it was known as 'schottisch', the chotis arrived in Madrid in 1850. Its popularity grew after being danced by Queen Isabel II at a Royal Palace party, moving from aristocratic salons to streets and squares, and establishing itself as a symbol of Madrid's identity. In this dance, tradition dictates that the woman leads the steps.
