Cineteca Madrid, located in Matadero Madrid, will dedicate the month of May to documentary cinema, featuring a retrospective of filmmaker Frederick Wiseman and various thematic cycles.

The programming at Cineteca Madrid for May will focus on the documentary genre, offering a diverse selection that includes a retrospective of acclaimed director Frederick Wiseman, as well as cycles dedicated to memory, the Syrian revolution, and Latin American cinema. Additionally, sessions linked to the 23rd edition of Documenta Madrid will be presented.
Wiseman, with over six decades of career, is the central figure of the month. His work is characterized by direct observation of democratic institutions, without voice-overs or interviews. The retrospective will begin on May 5 with Titicut Follies, followed by Welfare (May 7), High School (May 8), Central Park (May 9), and At Berkeley (May 10).
The second half of the month will continue with screenings such as Ballet on May 14, The Store (May 15), and City Hall (May 16). The cycle will conclude on May 17 with The Great Menu (Menus-Plaisirs - Les Troisgros), a foray by the director into fiction cinema.
Alongside Wiseman's work, Cineteca Madrid will host the 'Memories of the Syrian Revolution' cycle, with screenings of 5 Seasons of Revolution (2023) and My Memory Is Full of Ghosts (2024) on May 5 and 6. Both sessions will feature the participation of a researcher specializing in contemporary Syrian cinema.
The 'Images Against Oblivion' cycle will pay tribute to filmmaker Concha Barquero, who passed away in 2025. Works created with Alejandro Alvarado will be screened, such as Pepe el andaluz (May 12) and Caja de resistencia (May 13), documentaries exploring historical memory.
Finally, the 'I Sing to Difference' cycle will be dedicated to Latin American filmmakers, inspired by a verse from Violeta Parra. This block, addressing identity and diversity in Latin America, will open on May 22 with Bordando la frontera, by Ángeles Necoechea.
