The award ceremony for the National Bullfighting Award 2025 took place in the Senate, where the bullfighter Curro Vázquez was recognized for his outstanding performance at the festival held in Las Ventas on October 12. This award, promoted by ten autonomous communities, including the Community of Madrid, and the Fundación Toro de Lidia, aims to honor key figures in the bullfighting world.
“"Young people have become fans like I've never seen before; they are going to bullfights."
During his speech, the bullfighter expressed his surprise and satisfaction at the renewed interest of younger generations in bullfighting events. He explained that, after years of concern about the lack of connection between young people and bullfighting, the situation has drastically changed. He attributed this phenomenon to what he called “the revelation of the prohibition,” suggesting that attempts to ban minors from bullfights had the opposite effect, sparking their curiosity.
Representatives from the regional government, including the counselors for Environment, Agriculture and Interior, and Culture, Tourism and Sport, attended the gala, which was seen as a clear gesture of institutional support for bullfighting from the Community of Madrid. The regional executive recalled that this is the second year this award has been granted, after the central government abolished it in 2024. The Community of Madrid was one of the first to work towards reinstating this recognition, emphasizing its cultural value.
“"As soon as young people, under 18, were not allowed to go to bullfights, they became more interested. They wanted to see what they weren't allowed to see, what was so special about it. They came and saw a magnificent spectacle, a very real spectacle, a spectacle that moves you. The kids have become fans."
The president of the Senate, Pedro Rollán, described the Upper House as “the home and refuge of bullfighting and the world of bullfighting” during the event. The president of a major political party, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, was also present, highlighting the event's significance in political and cultural spheres.
