The Puerta del Sol in Madrid was the final setting for the solidarity initiative “Breaking the Silence,” driven by firefighter and athlete Jaime Rodríguez. This challenge aimed to bring visibility to mental health through a walking tour across the entire Community of Madrid.
After more than a month and a total distance of 3,953 kilometers—a figure symbolically chosen to represent suicide deaths in Spain in 2024—Rodríguez completed his adventure. The main objective was not athletic, but to open conversations and break down prejudices surrounding mental health.
The mayor of Alcalá de Henares, Judith Piquet, was present at the closing ceremony to support the initiative. The challenge, backed by the Community of Madrid, has served to remind people that mental health affects all ages and that silence is a major obstacle for those needing help.
Piquet emphasized the importance of discussing mental health, calling it a “necessary, urgent, and profoundly responsible” task, and highlighted the need to create spaces for listening and support to combat taboos surrounding depression, anxiety, or suicidal behaviors.
The initiative has shown that every step taken by Jaime Rodríguez has served to convey a message of courage: asking for help is not a sign of weakness. The physical journey has ended, but the message of listening, empathy, and closeness as a starting point for facing silent suffering continues in motion.
