The President of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, visited the M86 Swimming Center to commemorate its 40th anniversary and the conclusion of the first phase of its modernization, highlighting the "in-depth transformation" of the facilities.

The President of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, visited the World Swimming Center 86 (M86) in Madrid, coinciding with the facility's 40th anniversary. Ayuso emphasized the "in-depth transformation as has never been carried out in its entire history," describing it as a renovation that "not everything is visible, but everything will be very useful."
Located in Madrid's Retiro district, the complex was the world's largest swimming facility in the 80s and 90s and remains the only pool in Spain to have hosted world championships. Prominent athletes such as Pilar Peña, Paula Camus, and Sara Saldaña have passed through its facilities.
The center, equipped with various pools, gyms, and classrooms, also functions as a Swimming Technification Center. It currently trains 83 athletes, many of whom are members of the national team, and registered nearly 900,000 users in 2025.
The regional government has invested 8 million euros in the first phase of the comprehensive renovation, co-financed with NextGenerationEU funds. This stage has renewed the electrical and air conditioning systems, rehabilitated the main building, and modernized the pool basin, improving energy efficiency and achieving annual savings of over 400,000 euros. The facade has also been renovated.
The second phase, planned until 2029 with a budget of 5.5 million euros, will include actions on the outdoor pool, changing rooms, administration area, and the Sports Medicine Center. These works are part of the Plan Renueva to reform and update major sports facilities in the region.
The Madrid Swimming Federation currently has 8,517 licenses and 66 clubs, being the federation with the most sponsored athletes (63) and contributing 53 members to the national team, with a record of 460 medals in Spanish championships and 25 in international competitions.
