The Assembly of Madrid will install ten new seats in its hemicycle in response to the projected increase in deputies following the 2027 regional elections, driven by population growth. The President of the Assembly, Enrique Ossorio, announced that the estimate is for the number of representatives to rise from 135 to 143, with one additional deputy for every 50,000 additional inhabitants.
The exact number of new deputies will be determined by the census at the end of this year. Although eight seats are currently unoccupied, ten additional seats have been ordered to be set up at the end of the benches by March 2027, when the Assembly will be dissolved for the regional elections. Ossorio indicated that these seats can be easily removed in the future.
The President of the Assembly highlighted the "unanimity" among parliamentary groups to establish a maximum limit for the number of deputies, aiming to prevent unlimited future increases in the regional Chamber's seats.
Ossorio also addressed the future building for the Chamber of Accounts, the construction of which on the adjacent plot to the Assembly of Madrid is an objective of his presidency. Currently, the institution rents a building for one million euros annually.
The deadline for submitting proposals for the construction tender is July 13. The process, conducted with the Official College of Architects of Madrid, aims to ensure transparency and quality. Coherence with the aesthetic of the regional Chamber's complex has been mandated, and 40 architectural teams have already visited the site.
An estimated cost of 24 million euros is projected for the new building, which will feature 10,000 square meters and 140 parking spaces. The jury will include prominent architects from the Official College of Architects of Madrid and architects who successfully constructed the current building.
Ossorio presented a review of parliamentary activity, noting the approval of 29 laws, surpassing the national average of 16. These include three General Budgets of the Community of Madrid, laws for tax reductions, housing promotion, the Family Business Law, and the law on the unborn.
During the legislature, deputies registered 82,000 initiatives and held 78 Plenary sessions. The President of the Community, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, faced 291 questions, while councilors responded to 879. Three Debates on the State of the Region were held, and the regional Assembly hosted study commissions on financing systems, screens and youth, and drugs, as well as an investigative commission on academic chairs where Begoña Gómez, wife of the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, appeared.
