The Mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, has announced that next week he will contact the team of Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado to organize an official reception at the City Hall, aiming to honor her as a "beacon of freedom."

Prior to the presentation of the book Goya a la luz del norte, Martínez-Almeida expressed his "great joy" regarding Machado's visit to Madrid. He described her as a "Nobel Peace Prize laureate" and, more importantly, as a "beacon of freedom, human rights, and democracy."

"An admirable, extraordinary woman who has confronted the Venezuelan dictatorship, putting her life and physical integrity at risk, and who, nevertheless, has never bowed her head, facing the cowardice of those who seek to destroy her and what she represents."

The mayor explained that they will assess with Machado's team the possibility of holding this reception at the Madrid City Hall. The intention is for the event to take place at the Consistory "on behalf of all Madrid residents," to offer her "a tribute, a recognition of all her achievements, of everything she has accomplished."
Martínez-Almeida conveyed his confidence not only in being able to meet with María Corina Machado but also in holding an official reception at the Madrid City Hall.
