The Mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, called on Friday at the Wake Up Spain forum for a more flexible regulatory and fiscal framework to enable the capital to compete effectively with major international cities, while also urging an active defense of liberal democracy against the advance of authoritarianism.
During his speech at the event organized by El Español newspaper, Almeida emphasized the crucial role of cities in the global future and the growing influence of local governments in decision-making. For Madrid to compete on equal terms with other world capitals, the mayor stressed the need for regulatory tools that allow for greater efficiency and a more competitive fiscal environment.
This capacity is essential to consolidate the capital's image as a hub of economic activity and decision-making. Furthermore, Almeida extended his appeal to European institutions, calling for greater recognition of the strategic value of cities. He argued that, after four decades of peace and prosperity, the European Union must bring its decisions closer to urban realities, listening to cities and allowing them to actively influence policy design.
The mayor also took the opportunity to deliver a broader political message regarding the international situation. In a context he described as turbulent, Almeida called for a stronger and more "belligerent" defense of liberal democracy. He highlighted that this system is based on fundamental rights, the separation of powers, and respect for institutions, and that commitment to these principles is essential given the rise of authoritarianism in various parts of the world.
