The public entity Adif has initiated the tender process for the design of improvement projects for the access points to the underground stations of Doce de Octubre, Embajadores, Maestra Justa Freire-Polideportivo de Aluche, and Las Águilas, all part of the C-5 line of Madrid's commuter rail network (Cercanías).
The contract, budgeted at 623,392 euros, covers the preparation of preliminary studies and construction projects. The objective is to modernize these accesses with a design that prioritizes functionality, urban integration, low maintenance, and, crucially, an improved user experience.
The planned actions aim to increase safety and accessibility. Key interventions include the installation of new canopies to protect against adverse weather, enclosure elements to enhance security and prevent dirt ingress, and the renovation of finishes and furnishings to create a more visible and recognizable identity for the C-5 line.
Improvements to the architectural and functional design are also considered, incorporating solutions integrated into the urban environment to facilitate access identification and optimize pedestrian routes and underground spaces leading to the ticket halls.
This initiative is part of the Madrid Commuter Plan (Plan de Cercanías de Madrid) and, specifically, the C-5 Action Plan, which seeks to modernize the line, increase its capacity, and improve accessibility. The C-5 line handles the highest passenger volume in Madrid's commuter network, serving 72 million users last year.
The C-5 Action Plan has a total investment of 1.35 billion euros. Of this amount, Adif is allocating approximately 650 million for 28 infrastructure improvement projects, while Renfe will invest 700 million, primarily in acquiring new trains and adapting maintenance depots.
Through this contract, Adif is advancing the definition of solutions that will enable future works to adapt these infrastructures to new mobility demands, contributing to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 9 (reliable and quality infrastructure) and 11 (safe and accessible transport systems). These actions may be co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
