The Paracuellos de Jarama City Council has formalized an agreement with the municipality's six pharmacies to detect cases of unwanted loneliness among the elderly and refer them to social services.

The initiative, named Farmacia aliada de los mayores (Pharmacy allied with the elderly), leverages the trust and frequency with which older residents visit these establishments. The goal is to turn pharmacy professionals into an early warning network capable of identifying signs of social isolation without overstepping their professional boundaries.
On June 4, 2026, municipal representatives held a meeting with pharmacy managers to coordinate the project's launch. During the session, it was emphasized that pharmacists will not take on social work duties, but will act as a bridge to channel information to available municipal resources.

"Pharmacies, due to their proximity, accessibility, and frequent contact with the elderly, constitute an essential community resource; we have a fundamental tool for detecting social risk situations that we cannot afford to waste."

To ensure the program's effectiveness, the City Council will provide specific training to staff at the participating pharmacies. These establishments will display an official badge identifying them as partners in this support network, a measure already highlighted as a benchmark within the Community of Madrid.
