Gran Canal street, the main artery of the Venecia neighborhood in Alcalá de Henares, is in the final phase of its renovation. The asphalting works, currently underway, aim to improve mobility, accessibility, and pedestrian safety on this strategic route connecting various city areas and the banks of the Henares River.
Mayor Judith Piquet, accompanied by deputy mayors Gustavo Severien and Cristina Alcañiz, visited the construction sites. The intervention, part of the ‘Alcalá improves its neighborhoods’ program and the City Council's overall urban modernization plan, has an investment exceeding 500,000 euros.
The project includes the comprehensive renovation of sidewalks and the roadway, covering over 1,300 meters of accessible sidewalk and nearly 7,000 square meters of new asphalt. Various measures have been implemented to eliminate architectural barriers and facilitate pedestrian transit, adapting sidewalks to current accessibility regulations.
Special attention has been paid to safety, with sidewalks advanced at pedestrian crossings near parking areas to increase visibility between drivers and pedestrians. Crossings have been lowered or leveled with the new asphalt, facilitating access for people with reduced mobility, wheelchair users, and those with strollers.
The City Council assures that the expansion of pedestrian spaces will not affect existing parking spots, maintaining capacity and even incorporating new ones at certain points along the street.
Piquet highlighted that this action responds to a "historic demand" from residents and will improve the connection of the Venecia neighborhood with other areas of Alcalá and the surroundings of the Henares River, aiming for "more accessible, safer, and pedestrian-friendly streets."
