The City Museum of Torrejón de Ardoz is joining the commemoration of International Museum Day, celebrated on May 18th, with a special program of free activities for the whole family. The celebration holds special significance as it coincides with the tenth anniversary of the Museum of Giants and Big-Heads, an emblematic cultural space in the municipality.
The program will take place on Saturday, May 16th, and Sunday, May 17th. On Saturday, the Museum of Giants and Big-Heads will have open doors from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM. In the Plaza del Museo de la Ciudad, the Giants and Big-Heads Parade has prepared workshops, dance performances, and diploma awards, all free and outdoors, to familiarize visitors with this popular tradition.
Attendees will be able to learn about the creation processes of the giants and big-heads, their history, names, and details about the Announcing Angels, among other museum curiosities. On Sunday, May 17th, the Alfonso Paso Theater Group will present two showings of the theatrical visit “The (Crazy) History of Torrejón de Ardoz,” at 11:00 AM and 12:30 PM, a scenic tour through the city's history. Prior registration by sending an email is required for these performances.
Through this initiative, the city council reaffirms its commitment to the historical dissemination of Torrejón de Ardoz and aims to increase visitor numbers to the City Museum. The museum, housed in the emblematic former ironworks building (la antigua Herrería), aims to promote and recover the municipality's historical heritage. Its exhibition route covers from the first settlers around 5000 BC to the present day, spread across two floors and over 600 square meters.
A third floor is dedicated to temporary exhibitions, either related to the municipality or avant-garde displays by local artists. The usual opening hours of the City Museum are Wednesday to Sunday, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM and 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM (winter). From June to September, the hours are extended: 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM and 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM.
