The Círculo Hispanista Complutense has organized a conference to champion the figure of Antonio de Nebrija, author of the first Spanish grammar. The event will take place on June 23rd at the Old Hospital of Santa María la Rica.
The lecture will be delivered by Vicente Sánchez Moltó, official chronicler of Alcalá de Henares, who will discuss the Renaissance humanist's legacy in the city. The activity, with free admission until capacity is reached, is supported by the Alcalá de Henares City Council.
The organizing association notes that the figure of Nebrija, who spent his final years in Alcalá de Henares under the protection of Cardinal Cisneros, still lacks sufficient visibility within the local historical heritage. The Círculo Hispanista Complutense aims to promote his recognition, including the potential recovery and signage of related spaces and the installation of a statue in Plaza de San Diego.
Vicente Sánchez Moltó, official chronicler since 2010 and author of numerous publications on local history, is considered an authority on the study of Alcalá's past. His selection as speaker underscores the conference's importance in exploring Nebrija's impact.
The Círculo Hispanista Complutense intends to continue fueling the debate on the role Antonio de Nebrija played in shaping Hispanic culture and the place he deserves in the memory of Alcalá de Henares.
