The Association for Intellectual Disability of Alcalá de Henares (APHISA) has been recognized with the Ciudad de Alcalá Award for Civic Values. This award, part of the 57th edition of the Premios Ciudad de Alcalá, honors the entity's valuable and exemplary social work for the care, integration, and autonomy of individuals with intellectual disabilities and support for their families.
This year, 2026, APHISA celebrates its 50th anniversary, establishing itself as a benchmark in the social life of Alcalá de Henares and in the full inclusion of people with disabilities in the Community of Madrid. Founded in December 1975 by a group of parents, the association has grown in facilities, professionals, and volunteers, currently serving 380 individuals.
The entity manages various centers and services, including the Occupational Center, the Residency or Day Center, the Early Attention Center (funded by the Community of Madrid for children aged 0 to 6), the Support Service for Integral Inclusion and Development (SAIDI), the Training Housing for Autonomous Living (VEVA), and the Family Support Service (SAF).
APHISA obtained the declaration of public utility in 1984, strengthening its mission and vision. Its core values include placing the individual and their family at the center, quality of service, professionalism, equality, transparency, and innovation.
The association also promotes self-management and self-determination, being part of Plena Inclusión Madrid. Self-advocates are groups of adults with intellectual disabilities who work to defend their rights. APHISA's trajectory recently culminated with their role as grand marshals for the Fairs and Festivals of Alcalá de Henares on August 22nd.
