The Alcalá de Henares City Council has begun pavement repairs on Calle Mayor, an intervention valued at over 48,000 euros, aimed at enhancing the safety and durability of this central thoroughfare.

Since last Wednesday, April 16, the Department of Public Works of the Alcalá de Henares City Council has been carrying out repair work on the paving of Calle Mayor. This project, with an investment of 48,230.60 euros, primarily aims to improve the condition of one of the busiest arteries in the city's historic center.

"This is a necessary intervention to improve the safety, stability, and durability of the pavement."

The work focuses on deep cleaning the cobblestone joints with pressurized water, removing deteriorated material, and then refilling them with a special cement-rich mortar. Additionally, displaced or sunken cobblestones are being repositioned, and manhole and drain covers that had lost their level are being adjusted. These actions are crucial to prevent subsidence and ensure the safety of pedestrians and vehicles.
The intervention is being carried out in sections of approximately 60 meters, working only on half of the roadway at each phase to minimize disruptions. A key aspect is the mortar's setting time, which requires 48 hours without foot traffic on the treated area. During this period, the installation of outdoor seating is also prohibited, a limitation affecting local hospitality businesses, although the Council assures that planning aims to reduce inconvenience as much as possible.
Before the start of the works, the City Council held a meeting with political representatives, technicians, and merchants to explain the details of the operation and address concerns about potential impacts. The municipal objective is to reinforce the pavement of Calle Mayor and prevent future incidents in this emblematic artery of Alcalá de Henares.
