The Móstoles City Council illuminates its facade and the statue of Andrés Torrejón, in Plaza del Pradillo, in green this October 5, to mark World Meningitis Day.

With this gesture, the council joins the initiative promoted by the Spanish Association against Meningitis and Sepsis (AEMS). The aim is to raise awareness of this infectious disease, which causes severe sequelae and can be fatal.
Meningitis is the inflammation of the membranes covering the brain and spinal cord. It can be viral, usually benign, or bacterial, which is the most dangerous. The main causative bacteria are Haemophilus Influenzae B (HiB), pneumococcus, and meningococcus (with its serogroups A, B, C, W, X, and Y).
It is estimated that approximately 12,000 people are affected annually in Spain, with about 2,000 cases of bacterial meningitis and 10,000 viral.
