The Getafe City Council has begun the process to name the new performing arts venue in honor of actress Carmen Machi. The proposal, presented by the Culture delegation and supported by the Culture Forum, aims to recognize a key figure in the national scene and pay tribute to the role of women in the performing arts.
Mayor Sara Hernández informed the actress of the proposal, which she received with "deep emotion and gratitude." The naming completes a perfect circle for the city, which loves theater, and for an actress of Carmen's "stature," according to the mayor.
Machi's connection with Getafe dates back to her beginnings on the stage of the former Municipal Culture Center (CMC), where she was part of the local company Taormina. Her career has been recognized with a Goya Award, multiple Max Awards, the National Cinematography Award, and the Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts.
This new theater, complementing the cultural facilities of the Federico García Lorca Theater, stands out for its open-plan and versatile design, lacking a traditional fixed stage, which allows for the adaptation of the spatial configuration to multiple contemporary or classic performing arts formats.
The building will also house training, design, and rehearsal rooms for local companies and artists, conceived as an integral creation center. Collaboration with associative groups and companies like LaJoven will be consolidated.
