The initiative, coinciding with World Wide Knit in Public Day, is organized by Wanawake Mujer and the Tejiendo Solidaridad project of the La Ribota Association, with the collaboration of the Alcorcón City Council. The goal is to raise awareness about gender equality and support educational projects for girls who are survivors of female genital mutilation and child marriage.
A large collective installation of handmade knitted flowers will be created. Councilor for Citizen Participation, Feminism, and Seniors, Sonia López, invited residents to participate in creating 'Spain's largest garden of knitted flowers for Equality', expected to exceed 600 flowers contributed from various parts of the country.
The event will take place between 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM and will include free activities such as community knitting, flower-making workshops, creative activities for children, and a storytelling session. At 1:30 PM, a manifesto for equality and coexistence will be read.
Throughout the morning, there will also be a solidarity space featuring artisanal products made by women who are survivors of violence, female genital mutilation, child marriage, and trafficking for exploitation, as well as works by solidarity knitters from Alcorcón.
“"Thanks to this action of citizen participation, solidarity, and equality, an everyday act like knitting acquires a symbolic value of weaving women's networks as a commitment to equality and against all forms of violence against women."
The installation will start with over 600 knitted flowers sent by individuals and organizations from different parts of the country, aiming to become the largest knitted flower garden in Spain.
