The main objective of this campaign, organized by the Regional Transfusion Center, is to inform students about the requirements and process for becoming bone marrow donors, an altruistic action that saves lives.
The initiative will begin at the Faculty of Information Sciences of the Complutense University of Madrid, followed by the Faculty of Philology. Subsequently, the campaign will move to the Carlos III University of Madrid, which will host it on the Getafe campus on October 14 and 15, and on the Leganés campus on October 16 and 20, at the Torres Quevedo building.
The University Bone Marrow Tour will also visit the Rey Juan Carlos University, with stops at its campuses in Alcorcón (October 19), Móstoles (20); Aranjuez (21); Vicálvaro (22); and Fuenlabrada (26). Finally, the campaign will reach the Autonomous University of Madrid, covering the Faculties of Philosophy and Letters (October 27), Education (28), and Economics (29).
Currently, the Community of Madrid has over 76,895 hematopoietic stem cell donors. In 2025, 3,795 new donors were added, of which 1,586 joined through the University Bone Marrow Tour. Enrollment in the Spanish Registry of Bone Marrow Donors (REDMO) increases the chances of finding a compatible donor for patients requiring a transplant.
The donation of blood stem cells, also known as hematopoietic stem cells, is the only curative option for many individuals suffering from diseases such as leukemia or lymphoma. These cells are found inside bones and are responsible for producing red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. To register as a donor, individuals must be between 18 and 40 years old, weigh over 50 kilograms, be in good health, and have a Body Mass Index (BMI) between 20 and 35.
