The Vox party has presented a proposal to replace the LGBTI flag with the Spanish flag in Pedro Zerolo Square, a key location for Madrid's Pride.

The proposal, to be debated in the Center District's plenary session this Thursday, July 9, calls for the substitution of the rainbow flag with the national flag in the aforementioned square, known for being the epicenter of events like the opening speech and concerts of Pride.
The initiative was presented by José Manuel Menéndez Hernández, a local councilor for Vox. This proposal aligns with recent statements by the former spokesperson for Vox in the Madrid City Council, Javier Ortega Smith, who stated that the national flag represents all Spaniards.
Pedro Zerolo Square, formerly known as Vázquez de Mella Square, was renamed in 2015. The rainbow flag was permanently installed in 2022, following an approval in the Cibeles plenary a year earlier, with the support of all groups except Vox, which abstained. A plaque on the mast highlights that Madrid is an open, plural, diverse, and free city that welcomes the LGTBI+ community.
