The traditional health surveillance campaign by the Community of Madrid is focusing this summer on the four natural areas in the region authorized for bathing. The regional government has reported an increase in inspections, with a total of 52 water quality controls to be conducted until September 15th. The main objective is to ensure these locations meet adequate hygienic-sanitary conditions for bathers.
The bathing spots under surveillance include El Muro and Virgen de la Nueva beaches, located in the San Juan Reservoir (in San Martín de Valdeiglesias); El Alberche beach (in Aldea del Fresno); Las Presillas (in Rascafría); and Los Villares (in Estremera). These sites have European authorization for bathing.
Technicians from the General Subdirectorate of Food Safety and Environmental Health, supported by the Regional Public Health Laboratory and coordinated by the General Directorate of Public Health, are responsible for the analyses. These tests verify the absence of harmful microorganisms and confirm that the water complies with European standards.
Following recent fires in the Sierra Oeste, the Community of Madrid conducted specific analyses in the San Juan Reservoir and El Alberche Beach. The results from these samples confirmed that the water at both locations was suitable for bathing, according to the regional executive.
Health authorities reiterate the importance of respecting authorized areas and advise against bathing in uncontrolled points of rivers, reservoirs, or lakes. These unmonitored waters may contain harmful microorganisms and present dangers such as strong currents, uneven depths, rocks, or submerged objects, which increase the risk of accidents.
In authorized areas, special vigilance over children is recommended, along with avoiding dives in shallow areas or from heights, and checking water depth before entering. Entry into the water should be gradual to prevent sudden temperature changes, especially after sunbathing or exercising. It is also advised not to jump or dive in murky waters to avoid hidden obstacles or other swimmers.
Risk prevention also includes measures against heat. The Community of Madrid advises limiting sun exposure, using sunscreen (especially for minors), drinking water frequently, and moderating alcohol consumption during bathing days. These actions aim to minimize risks associated with summer activities and ensure safety in authorized natural spaces.
