The Special High-Altitude Rescue Group (GERA) of the Community of Madrid firefighters has carried out several interventions in the Madrid mountains to assist hikers and runners who were caught by strong gusts of wind and snow in the Cotos area.

The operations, which took place between La Laguna de los Pájaros and Cotos, were conducted in collaboration with Forest Agents and SUMMA 112. According to the 112-Comunidad de Madrid emergency service, some of the rescued hikers lacked adequate equipment to face the adverse weather conditions encountered on the mountain.
Fortunately, all those attended were in good general condition, although some showed mild symptoms of hypothermia. Regional emergency services have taken the opportunity to remind people of the importance of checking the weather forecast before undertaking any mountain activity.
