Ione Belarra, Secretary General of Podemos, has championed her party's candidacy for the Community of Madrid elections as a revitalizing force for the left. According to Belarra, both the PSOE and Más Madrid have conceded these elections and are "comfortable" in their opposition to the regional president, Isabel Díaz Ayuso.
Speaking at a press conference in the Lower House, Belarra stated: "We are presenting this candidacy because the PSOE concedes it, Más Madrid concedes it, and it is very comfortable to be in opposition against the right, but we are here to change people's lives and to oust the right, not just to put very nice things in an electoral program."
The Podemos leader emphasized that her party is "going all out" with the candidacy she heads, recalling past successes such as removing the PP from central government. Now, the objective is to "oust" Ayuso from the Community of Madrid, which she described as the "ideological radiating core of the Spanish right".
Belarra called for a "brave and strong left," represented by Podemos, which will dedicate all its "determination" to launching a candidacy focused on "the people who are always last, regardless of who has governed," in contrast to the "Government of the Four Towers and La Moraleja".
These statements come after Más Madrid rejected on Monday exploring a unity list with Podemos, urging to "concentrate the vote" of the left within the "existing forces" in the region, arguing that the 'morados' have little local presence.
